Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Products – Bottled water from a tap?

City dwellers have city water but suburb folks like me don’t always have that luxury. We have to search for things like “reverse osmosis water treatment” if we do not want to drink chlorine.

So when I hear about a product that can purify rainwater without chemicals, I am all ears.

This product claims to purify rainwater and tap water in a chemical-free process called reverse osmosis. The quality of the water is so much improved that it can rival any brand name bottled water. (move over Evian and Fiji)

Why purify your water this way

You may need to just remove the chlorine taste from your tap water but my rainwater needs to be purified.

My family collects rainwater off our tin roof through a series of gutters and pipes and stores it in an underground concrete tank.

The problem with rainwater is it is in a state that is great for microbes to thrive in. So if you do not want your catchment tank to become a sauna for bacteria then you had better have some sort water purification system set up.

Can you use chlorine as a rainwater purifier?

Yes, we use chlorine but getting the balance right is a huge challenge. You will be either showering in pool water or feeling itchy when you think of the possibility of your skin becoming a live host to one of your new found microbe friends that survived.

The key is to attach a good water filter to the pipe that leads to your house from your catchment tank and then add the purifier to that line somewhere in between your house and filter.

How the APEC water treatment system works.

As the water is pushed through the device, it purifies water in five stages:
The first stage filters out sediments like dust particles and rust.

The second stage blocks chemicals like chlorine and other things that cause the water to taste or smell bad.

The third layer removes residual chemicals that may be left over from the previous stage.

The fourth layer goes deeper. You can drink the water at this stage because up to 99% of contaminants like arsenic, lead or heavy metals cannot pass the high rejection reverse osmosis membrane.

In stage five the coconut carbon filter takes care of the taste to make sure that the water is crisp and without any contaminants.

What exactly is reverse osmosis and can it purify water?
According to, “reverse osmosis is a water purification technology that uses a partially permeable membrane to remove ions, unwanted molecules and larger particles from drinking water”.

Some scientist even claim that drinking water purified this way is better for your health since many potentially harmful contaminants are removed.

While some “back-to-earth” supporters assert that reverse osmosis causes a greater health risk because it removes minerals from the water that are essential to human health.

Many doctors say that such fears are unfounded since we get most of the vital minerals we need from the foods we eat not so much from drinking water.

The main thing to note is that whatever water you drink, make sure that it is clean. Whether purified through a reverse osmosis rainwater system like APEC or some other means.
